Choosing a career path can be one of the most difficult life-decisions you will have to make and at an early age as well. A few people, lucky enough to have a marked tilt or knack for a particular field or skill, find it easy enough to find their niche in the market naturally. For the large majority, it is slightly harder to find their jam.
The thing is, it is never too early or too late to start thinking of a career or a career change. You could know in your heart that you will be an Engineer when you grow up when you are ten. Or you could hop from one job to another your entire life. Both are perfectly acceptable. In fact, job happening is the new normal for the millennial.
It is, however, true that choosing the right career from the very beginning can save you a lot of time, investment and heartache, if you are not the job hopping type. Here are some of the things you can do to make a career decision easy for you:
·         Take aptitude tests
If you are not sure about which of the broad categories of career you want to pursue, the first thing you need to do is take an aptitude test. There are a number of free tests offered by high schools and colleges. There are some very good ones available online as well, for example the Myers-Briggs Test. These tests will help you assess your personality type and even suggest some possible career paths for you. They will let you know what careers are not suitable for you as well, thus preventing you from making the wrong decision.
·         Do internships
Once you have found some potential options that you think you may enjoy pursuing, internships are the best way to test the waters of the workplace. They are temporary, yet they will allow you to gauge whether or not you are comfortable working in that area. You will also have an exposure to the work environment and give you a chance to work on your public relations. You may even get paid.
·         Find a Mentor you trust
Find someone you trust to give you sound and practical advice, someone preferably from the same line of career.They should be someone you have studied under or are close to, so that they have a good idea of your strengths and weaknesses. A good mentor can help you achieve your career goals with fewer chances of complete mess ups.
·         Use online forums for expert and on-field advice
Seek expert on field input from people in your area of interest. Numerous online forums like LinkedIn have discussion boards and messaging options through which you can ask any questions that you have and get professional opinions and accurate depiction of the inner workings of the industry you choose.
·         Be introspective
 Lastly, know that you have to look inside of yourself and pinpoint exactly what it is that you want to do. An overabundance of different opinions can backfire if you are a rolling stone. Prioritize what you want from a career, salary wise, in terms of the work life balance and career growth options.
In the end, it is you who will have to make the call and only you who will be responsible for the success or failure.
